The Centre for Coastal Health, on behalf of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, recently completed a literature review and risk assessment on the use of "Doctor Fish" in personal service pedicure facilities. Ichthyotherapy, or the treatment of patients with skin disorders through the use of Garra rufa ("Doctor Fish"), was described in The Lancet in 1989 from an ancient Turkish practice for the treatment of psoriasis. Personal service pedicure facilities have recently adopted this practice, but not without some controversy. |
